| Resumé du document : | Cette étude analyse les déterminants de l’adoption de la téléphonie mobile par les individus dans quatre pays de l’Afrique Subsaharienne : le Bénin, le Burkina-Faso, la Côte d’Ivoire et le Sénégal. Les TIC et particulièrement la téléphonie mobile, ce sont beaucoup répandus dans le monde et principalement en Afrique au cours des deux dernières décennies. En 2007, un rapport de l’Union Internationale des Télécommunications (UIT) montrait que toutes les prévisions d’expansion de la téléphonie mobile en Afrique avaient été dépassées. Il importe donc d’étudier les facteurs qui déterminent son adoption. La théorie économique a établi que les Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication (TIC), produisent des gains de productivité dans tous les secteurs d’activités de l’économie, par la réduction des coûts de transaction et par la facilité de circulation de l’information qu’elles engendrent ainsi que par les nouvelles opportunités qu’elles créent pour les individus. Les études antérieures ont montré que ceux qui adoptent le plus la téléphonie mobile sont les jeunes ayant leur âge compris entre 16 et 32 ans. D’autres facteurs qui déterminent son adoption sont entre autre le niveau d’éducation, le revenu, le milieu de résidence, le sexe. Pour atteindre l’objectif de cette étude, nous avons utilisé un modèle à variable dépendante limité de type probit. Ce modèle permet d’identifier les variables qui sont susceptibles d’avoir une influence sur la probabilité d’adoption d’un individu. Les données utilisées sont extraites de la base de données du Research ICT Africa (RIA). Cette base a été obtenue suite à une enquête réalisée en 2007 et 2008 dans 17 pays de l’Afrique subsaharienne. Des résultats de nos estimations, il ressort que dans tous les pays le niveau d’éducation des individus est un facteur déterminant dans l’adoption de la téléphonie mobile. Aussi les personnes vivant dans les milieux ruraux, ceux ayant des revenus faibles ainsi que les femmes dans certains pays (Bénin, Sénégal) ont de faible probabilité d’adoption par rapport respectivement aux personnes vivant dans les milieux urbains, ceux ayant des revenus élevés et les hommes. Si autrefois la téléphonie mobile est considérée comme la chasse gardée des jeunes, aujourd’hui il ressort de nos analyses que cette hypothèse n’est plus vérifiée. En effet, dans les pays étudiés l’analyse des résultats, révèlent que ceux qui adoptent le plus le téléphone mobile ont leur âge compris entre ]16, 52]. Par ailleurs, nos résultats ont fait ressortir que dans les pays où l’opérateur de téléphonie fixe est privatisé (Burkina-Faso et Sénégal), il y a un effet complémentaire entre le téléphone mobile et le téléphone fixe. Par contre dans les pays où l’opérateur de téléphonie fixe est toujours un patrimoine de l’Etat il y a un effet de substitution du téléphone mobile au téléphone fixe.
