Pour évaluer la concurrence entre les deux services, notre étude s’est donnée pour objectif d’établir la relation, en termes de complémentarité ou de substitution, qui lie les deux services à travers l’estimation d’un modèle de demande du téléphone fixe dans les pays de l’UEMOA en considérant la période allant de 1997 à 2009. Il ressort des résultats de nos estimations que dans les pays de l’UEMOA le téléphone mobile est un substitut pour le téléphone fixe mais l’ampleur de cette relation de substitution est très faible. S’il est vrai que le téléphone mobile a permis un accès plus rapide au service de communication, en milieu urbain et en milieu rural, le rôle que le téléphone fixe est appelé à jouer dans ses pays pour le développement des services de technologie de l’information et de la communication (TIC) dont notamment la meilleure utilisation de la large bande pour assurer une bonne accessibilité à l’Internet, doit pousser les autorités à se pencher sur les mesures à prendre pour une amélioration de la télédensité fixe.
